Personal struggle inspires alumna to give back
CU-Anschutz Medical Campus
When Mary E. Mercer, MD '43, enrolled in the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 1932, she only had $250 to her name. Several times Mary was forced to suspend her studies in order to find time to earn tuition money. As a result, it took her 11 years to graduate.
To help future students in similar circumstances, Mary set aside $500,000 of her estate to support students who go through personal emergencies that might otherwise prevent them from graduating.
